Do mobile phones emit radiation? Phones and your health

The number of cell phone users has increased rapidly. There were over 400 million cell phone subscribers in the United States in 2017 alone.

One the most important steps we can take in reducing our EMF exposure is reducing our mobile phone usage. Ideally we should turn off our phones off when not in use but turning airplane mode on will also help reduce the radio frequency radiation.

The problems with mobiles in particularly is that they are carried close to our bodies which can have a significant impact on our health. Cell phones emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation (radio waves), a form of non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas. Parts of the body nearest to the antenna can absorb this energy. For example, with regard to fertility, It has been shown that men who use their mobile phones render between 20 - 40% of their spermatozoid useless, i.e lost their motility. Those couples struggling to conceive should be particularly aware of these problems and opt for keeping to lower exposure levels.

Our heads also receive a hefty dose of this RF radiation and research indicates that those with are taking frequent long calls on their phones have a higher risk of developing brain tumors. In one study by Hardell et al which looked at the habits of mobile phone users over 10 years, risk of developing tumors increased with exposure duration. The researchers concluded that those with heavy use should be made aware of the risk. They also raised the point that previous research in this area which showed no risk did not have a long enough study time, EMF radiation is accumulative and therefore a minimum of 10 years is required to accurately study the effects.
